Double Handed Fly Rods
Two-handed rods are more powerful fly rods with a larger gripping surface on the bottom of the rod to allow you to cast your fly line with two hands. These fly rods are often used in conjunction with two-handed lines when fishing for coarse salmon and trout. These are available from class 6 up to class 11 and they can range in length from 12-17'. The length and class of rods varies mainly on the size of the water to be fished and the time of the season. Longer rods with higher classes are usually used on large rivers or early in the season and the shorter rods with a lower class later in the season when the river is low or when fishing some of our smaller rivers and streams. An all round rod can be said to be 13-14' in length in class 8-9.
What influences the choice of length for a two-handed rod is mainly the size of the water, how far you want to be able to cast and what options you want to have for controlling the fly. Generally, shorter rods of about 11-13' are used when fishing in smaller rivers such as Lödge, Em and Mörrum and longer rods of 15-17' are generally used when fishing, for example, in some of Sweden's or Norway's larger rivers.
A longer rod also makes casting easier and gives the possibility to control both fly and line more easily when fishing deep wading. A rod in the shorter lengths is also often used when the river is very high as the fish stay closer to the shore due to the water masses. A shorter two-handed rod allows more efficient fishing at shorter distances.
The class of rod includes what weight of line the rod handles. Rods that are of a higher class cast heavier lines, a heavier line in turn makes it easier to cast really big and heavy flies.
