Here we go through the basics of ned rig fishing. What to look out for, pitfalls and how to get started with the Ned Rig..
When the water is cold and the fish are lethargic, it's time to start finesse fishing. There are many methods that work in these conditions, but lately Ned Rig is considered one of the hottest. But is the Ned Rig really so new?
No, it isn't! In the early 80's a "mushroom head" was used in combination with a small worm by an American angler called Ned Khede, hence the name Ned Rig.

No, it isn't! In the early 80's a "mushroom head" was used in combination with a small worm by an American angler called Ned Khede, hence the name Ned Rig.
A few years later, none other than Kevin VanDam demonstrated Khede, the prototype of the ElaZtech material, and Khede was very impressed with its properties. This was because the jig rose slowly with each pause, perfectly imitating a small baitfish feeding on the bottom or a small crayfish with its claws in a defensive position.

Jigheads for Ned Rig
To fish the Ned Rig effectively, patience is the key to success as you want to allow the lure to slowly rise on the bottom. The mushroom-shaped jig head helps the lure to rise on the bottom and allows for long pauses while the lure stands straight up. Once the lure is on the bottom, it moves with small little movements due to water currents, line movements, etc. without the angler having to do anything.
In other words: Fish the lure by either dragging it on the bottom with longer pauses or jigging it back with small jumps and longer pauses. Many Americans also fish the Ned Rig without even moving it, and this is called "deadsticking". See our favourite Ned Rig jig heads below!

Ned Rig Rods
With the Ned Rig you fish with small lures and small hooks. Therefore, the rod must not be too strong. If you use that, you risk bending the hook out and losing fish. A rod with a rating between L and ML, i.e. a maximum casting weight of 10 to 20 grams maximum, is optimal in our opinion, depending on how much weight you need for bottom contact. Below are some great rods that are perfect for Ned Rig!
Reels for Ned Rig
You don't need a special reel to fish with the Ned Rig. However, we recommend not to go down to a reel that is too small. As described in the video, the line flies off more easily on a larger reel - which in turn leads to longer casts!
A reel size of 2500 to 3000 is perfect. These reels are the same size and the only difference is the size of the spool. Below we link some of our favourites in different price ranges.
