Productinformation

Genetic dry fly hackle has undergone continuous development for over half a century. The first pioneers in this field, like Harry Darbee and Andy Miner, laid the groundwork for modern hackle lines by selectively breeding roosters with improved hackle. In the 1960s, Henry Hoffman in Oregon began producing the finest grizzly hackle the world had seen, and in the 1970s and 80s, both the quality and availability of dry fly hackle expanded dramatically. Dr. Tom Whiting established Whiting Farms in 1989, furthering the genetic hackle lines with additions from Darbee, Miner, and Hebert to expand color and quality options.

Today, Whiting Farms leads the world in fly-tying hackle, including the American hackle line for saltwater, bass, streamers, and steelhead. Through meticulous genetic selection and optimized environmental and nutritional systems, Whiting Farms has reached new levels of quality, introducing a new Olympic medal grading system. This system evaluates hackle length, hook size range, and the total flies that can be tied.
